If i were to describe the movie in one word, it'll definitely be AWESOME.
Awesome,awesome,awesome....
Its something that you wont expect from a romantic movie. Its a romantic comedy flick, but it has no "romantic" sense, element or feel to it. Its so ironic when the movie turns out to be the opposite of what you think the movie should be.
What I though of the movie was, the movie brought back moments where you can see that men can also be insecure about themselves and their relationship. It shows that not only women goes through this phase, but men does too. And that is the best part of the movie, able to see the main character fall apart and live life as if there is no tomorrow.
The main character in High Fidelity is Rob, which is played by John Cusack, he acts like a 'big kid'--an adult but does not act like one, he is facing a bad breakup with his girlfriend Laura. He got all depressed about it and in my opinion he shouldn't have to be depressed, because he had it coming--why I say this is because, the girlfriend has been with him for so long, and what does all girl expect from a long term relationship??the next step of course..which is to commit to one another...and Rob, who has a serious commitment issue, cant take the hint and of course the breakup was doomed to happen.
Being the sore loser he is, he takes the breakup with Laura bitterly. With the breakup he takes a journey of his past and he writes a list of his TOP 5 BREAKUP of all time,so it would "ease his pain". He talks about his past girlfriends--tells about how they hook up and how they ended things...bla bla bla... After all the recollection and analysing,I think he realizes that that he is "Doomed to be left, doomed to be rejected". Discovering the reality, the reason for him not to commit is that he is still looking for this "perfect girl", and that perfect girl is just his fantasy, thus he has to come to his sense and except that in reality this "perfect girl" does not exist. Eventually, in the middle of the movie his senses kicked in and he understands know why he was so "unlucky" in love and the truth finally reveals.
Despite of all the drama Rob is facing, I really, really, 100% enjoyed Barry's character which is played by Jack Black as I think he steals the show. His character is hilarious, sarcastic, and at times can be a little mean--but I still like him as I think he's soooo adorable!! His knowledge and passion for music show that he's the type of person who enjoys music to the point that his life revolves around it. How he was paired with Dick played by Todd Louiso, the total opposite of his character is just pure genius!! I loved how despite of their different "taste in music", they still manages to have that chemistry between them--lets just say that they compliment each other well.
Before I end my post, I would like to say something here about Laura's character. I was taken aback at this one scene where Laura had just lost her Father. And of course when you loose someone you care for, you will somehow feel the pain and its normal for you to suffer, feel the loneliness of it all. The pain will eventually heal in time, you just have to be patient about it. What I don't like about the movie was, that particular scene where Laura and Rob was in the car and they had this conversation:
Laura: Listen, Rob, would you have sex with me? Because I want to feel something else than this. It either that,or I go home and put my hand in the fire. Unless you want to stub cigarettes out on my arm.
Rob: No. I only have a few left, I've been saving them for later.
Laura: Right. It'll have to be sex, then.
Rob: Right. Right.
To me, it gives out a negative impression to Laura's character as she seems to be "horny"...i dunno...its just what comes in mind when I saw the scene. Not appropriate at all, its as if it gives an impression that Laura uses sex to deal with her problems and its a shame because Laura's character throughout the movie give a clean, goody-to-shou impression to the viewer. I dunno, you decide!!
Whatever it is, I still enjoyed the movie. This movie is worthy enough to be on my Top 5 Movie list as it has proven to me that it kicks balls!!
Till next time,
Cheers..:p
