MY FAVOURITE FICTION CHARACTER

Having to choose a favourite fiction character is something challenging to do as I don't want to stick to only one character. That will be boring...but being the case that this is a task that is handed to me by my lecturer, I'll choose one just for the sake of it.

Ive put some serious thought on which character is worthy enough to be on my list. Here's a couple of names that's been going through my mind right about now, just to name a few: Mary Poppins, Alfalfa from The Little Rascal, Laney Bough from She's All That (my favourite movie), the character Hope from Hope and Faith and the lists goes on...

Well, my favourite fiction character would be:

TA'DA..ITS CHUCKIE!! YES, Chuckie...He's this nerdy yet cute little boy who is always afraid to take risks. His uncombed, messy red hair, bucked teeth, glasses and untie shoe is his image as you don't expect a two year old toddler to be well groomed...I mean that's the type of character that we fall in love with in the first place!

Even though Chuckie is afraid to take risks, but he still goes along with the dangerous adventures that the rest of the Rugrats (Tommy, Phil, Lil,Angelica, and Susie) goes through. He would never turn back on his friends just because he is afraid. That is one of the reason why I adore this character so much as he does not let his fears get to him.

Despite of his fears, hysteric moments and countless whines, Chuckie still manages to catch my attention as I enjoyed his character the most, what I mean by enjoy is that even though he is perceive as the weaker persona amongst his friends, he proves to be otherwise. He turns out to be the brave one instead.

On the second season, All Grown-up aired and Chuckie's character finally comes out of his shell as he is more approachable, open-minded, fearless and mature compared to his younger character. The evolution of Chuckie is very much interesting to watch as he sometimes can be a little funny. His whit comes naturally as his character shows the true life of a person.

So, this is it...my favourite fiction character!!He's cute right??

High Fidelity

If i were to describe the movie in one word, it'll definitely be AWESOME.

Awesome,awesome,awesome....

Its something that you wont expect from a romantic movie. Its a romantic comedy flick, but it has no "romantic" sense, element or feel to it. Its so ironic when the movie turns out to be the opposite of what you think the movie should be.

What I though of the movie was, the movie brought back moments where you can see that men can also be insecure about themselves and their relationship. It shows that not only women goes through this phase, but men does too. And that is the best part of the movie, able to see the main character fall apart and live life as if there is no tomorrow.

The main character in High Fidelity is Rob, which is played by John Cusack, he acts like a 'big kid'--an adult but does not act like one, he is facing a bad breakup with his girlfriend Laura. He got all depressed about it and in my opinion he shouldn't have to be depressed, because he had it coming--why I say this is because, the girlfriend has been with him for so long, and what does all girl expect from a long term relationship??the next step of course..which is to commit to one another...and Rob, who has a serious commitment issue, cant take the hint and of course the breakup was doomed to happen.

Being the sore loser he is, he takes the breakup with Laura bitterly. With the breakup he takes a journey of his past and he writes a list of his TOP 5 BREAKUP of all time,so it would "ease his pain". He talks about his past girlfriends--tells about how they hook up and how they ended things...bla bla bla... After all the recollection and analysing,I think he realizes that that he is "Doomed to be left, doomed to be rejected". Discovering the reality, the reason for him not to commit is that he is still looking for this "perfect girl", and that perfect girl is just his fantasy, thus he has to come to his sense and except that in reality this "perfect girl" does not exist. Eventually, in the middle of the movie his senses kicked in and he understands know why he was so "unlucky" in love and the truth finally reveals.

Despite of all the drama Rob is facing, I really, really, 100% enjoyed Barry's character which is played by Jack Black as I think he steals the show. His character is hilarious, sarcastic, and at times can be a little mean--but I still like him as I think he's soooo adorable!! His knowledge and passion for music show that he's the type of person who enjoys music to the point that his life revolves around it. How he was paired with Dick played by Todd Louiso, the total opposite of his character is just pure genius!! I loved how despite of their different "taste in music", they still manages to have that chemistry between them--lets just say that they compliment each other well.

Before I end my post, I would like to say something here about Laura's character. I was taken aback at this one scene where Laura had just lost her Father. And of course when you loose someone you care for, you will somehow feel the pain and its normal for you to suffer, feel the loneliness of it all. The pain will eventually heal in time, you just have to be patient about it. What I don't like about the movie was, that particular scene where Laura and Rob was in the car and they had this conversation:

Laura: Listen, Rob, would you have sex with me? Because I want to feel something else than this. It either that,or I go home and put my hand in the fire. Unless you want to stub cigarettes out on my arm.
Rob: No. I only have a few left, I've been saving them for later.
Laura: Right. It'll have to be sex, then.
Rob: Right. Right.

To me, it gives out a negative impression to Laura's character as she seems to be "horny"...i dunno...its just what comes in mind when I saw the scene. Not appropriate at all, its as if it gives an impression that Laura uses sex to deal with her problems and its a shame because Laura's character throughout the movie give a clean, goody-to-shou impression to the viewer. I dunno, you decide!!

Whatever it is, I still enjoyed the movie. This movie is worthy enough to be on my Top 5 Movie list as it has proven to me that it kicks balls!!

Till next time,

Cheers..:p

My Saviour...

As I try to recall my early reading history. I took a stroll down memory lane. If my memory serves me correctly, as a child I never develop any reading habits so its kind of difficult for me to write about books that were important to me or give any impact on me.
I don't know why books does not interest me at that time as i dread reading or having to go to the library when Mrs. Lee, my English teacher asks us to pick up a book and read to share with the class the next day. What I will always do to get out of reading the whole book was I'll read the synopsis of the book, and if I still cant understand the story I'll just scheme through the book. Jumping of one chapter to another chapter until I understand what the story is all about. When Mrs. Lee would call my name to talk about the book that I have chosen to share with the class my palms would always sweat, but inspite of all that I still manage to make my story interesting adding things here and there just to add a little "umph" to the story. (hmm..maybe that's where my passion for storytelling came about?!!i dunno..) but, to my surprise they didnt even notice that I was bluffing throughout the story, except for one person (you guess it) which is Mrs. Lee. I could tell that she wasn't at all please with my storytelling as she can smell my sweat from across the room.
Yes, i got into trouble (BIG TIME). You would not believe how I was punish and how Mrs. Lee helped develop my interest for reading came about.
Mrs. Lee is a type of person who is very devoted to her work. She loves challenges that comes her way and how she dealt with me was to take me as a challenge to her. A stubborn student who does not like to read!! So that is when my whole interest in books and reading came about.
Mrs. Lee introduce a reading project to the school board. There would be a card that invovles the student and their parents to participate. Students would take a book home everyday and read to their parents, and the parents would tick of one of three colums that said 'i can read this book with help', 'i can read this book by myself', or 'i can't read this book'. And they would sign the form and give it back to the teacher. Once the evaluation card was completed, students were given a card (achievement card) that marks the progress of the student. Whoever has the highest number of achievement cards, they would be recognise to the whole school as 'student of the month' and would be treated for pizza by the school. The best part was, if you were student of the month for 5 month, you would be receiving the 'citizenship award' which is presented to you by the Mayor of the city and you will receive a medal for it. That's what drives me to read and read until I manage to get that special award. I was the first asian to get that award in my school and until today my name is at the plague at that school...*sigh*... Those were the days!!
The first book that Ive picked up that really had an impact on me was the book called Charlotte's Web by E. B. (Elwyn Brooks) White, the reason for this is that it was the book that I happened to pick out randomly at the library. Which got me in trouble with Mrs. Lee. And which "spark" my interest in reading comes about. And without that book, I don't think that my interest in reading would develop until today, and despite of all the history that Ive gone through with reading a book, I would say that it was all worth it at the end.
And I owe it all to Mrs. Lee.

The New Semester.

Out with the old and in with the new.

Say Good-bye to Sem 1 and Hello to Sem 2!!

AAAHHHH...how that sweet, sweet sound of the new semester feels like I'm moving forward and actually shifting to what have come to be the next step. Let me be frank, I'm the type of person who dislike any challenges in life, the simplest things in life are my cup of tea. So to survive the first semester was like going through a bed of nails and I'm so relief that i made it to the 2nd semester!! Entering the 2nd semester has put me in a whole new scenario where everything is like a blur to me new faces, new lectures, new tutorial room and most importantly new subjects.

I'm kind of excited for this new semester because I'm having some interesting subjects which are Introduction to English Literature 1 and Creative Writing 1. Yup interesting alright, interesting enough to screw with my head!!Oh and because I've got all of them in 3 hour lectures(YES!! 3 hours). Like sitting down still for 20 minutes drives me mad already!! I'm not sure how long my interest in these "interesting subjects" would last for as I know for a fact not to judge something until I give it a shoot and yea yea...even though its just the introduction and yes Literature sounds boring....I'm surprise that I'm able to deal with the demand of the subject. Its to early to tell what will happen in this new semester as I only attended the first lecture. But i'm hoping for the best and everything to go as smooth as possible!!
